Early in 2023 I had the opportunity to review Florida-based Liberty Ammunition (Liberty Ammunition – It Just Hits Harder). I’ve been a fan since finding out more about their 3 product lines (see descriptions below), their incredible ballistics, and the people behind the scenes. Since there’s been a lot of very positive press surrounding Liberty Ammo lately, I thought I’d take another look and dig deeper into some of the findings of my review.
I’ve known Gary Ramey, CEO of Liberty Ammunition since his days with Honor Defense, and I know him well enough to know that Ramey doesn’t work for a company he doesn’t believe in. Wanting to learn more about Liberty’s fairly new offering “OverWatch” which came out shortly after I reviewed their Civil Defense and Ultra-Light ammunition last Spring, I had some questions. Luckily for me, Gary graciously agreed to do a quick interview:
Q: Gary, how long have you been with Liberty Ammunition?
A: A very short 18 months, time is flying by.
Q: What makes Liberty different from other defensive ammo brands?
A: Liberty ammo is lighter to carry. Other brands are heavy and not as effective. We also hit harder than other brands and deliver all the energy into the threat. Our bullet design is unique, we penetrate barriers, but rupture at the bottom of the cavity from the fluid pressure. Liberty is simply more effective ammunition.
Q: How is your Ultra-Light product so much lighter than its competition?
A: We use a shell-shock case that reduces the weight by 24% compared to a standard brass case.
Q: How many patents does Liberty Ammunition currently have?
A: We have 15 ammunition patents currently and two more in process.
Q: Of your 3 product lines, which one is in your personal carry gun and why?
A: I carry the Liberty OverWatch 9mm in my Honor Defense pistol. It is the hardest hitting 9mm ammo in the world. Liberty hits harder than Federal, Speer, Hornady, Winchester 45 ACP! It’s also lighter in weight which is a huge plus when you carry a few magazines.
Q: Why is it important to use defensive ammunition instead of regular target ammo?
A: Self-defense ammo won’t over-penetrate and create collateral damage. It is designed to stop the threat with a permanent wound channel.
Q: Without giving up trade secrets, why does Liberty hit harder than its competition?
A: Energy is a combination of weight and speed. In layman’s terms, the equation is ½ mass (weight) times squared velocity. Our design allows our bullets to travel at almost 2x the speed of sound, which allows us to hit harder. Our patented design then puts the brakes on the bullet once it enters soft tissue. We hit harder AND deliver all the energy into the threat.
Q: What makes OverWatch different than your Civil-Defense line?
A: OverWatch was designed at the request of a government agency. It is a slightly heavier projectile and provides deeper penetration with a delayed rupture. Both OverWatch and Civil Defense hit harder than the popular brands, which is why we are preferred by Operators, executive protection services and others.
Q: What’s next for Liberty Ammunition in 2024?
A: We are launching a line of reduced ricochet ammunition at SHOT Show. We are simply calling it “Liberty Steel Plate and Range.” Our customers can practice with ammo on steel or paper with ammo that has similar recoil properties.
